Since the age of the pyramids, quilting has evolved both as a utilitarian need to keep warm and as a means of self-expression and art.  The world quilt is derived from the Latin “culcita” which literally means a “stuffed sack.” Quilting is the process of joining three layers of fabric. Originally used as bed coverings or hanging quilts to cover unsealed doors, it has evolved into several different art forms.

Family Heritage Quilts can either mean a patterned quilt that has gone through generations of a family and acts as a binding tie between those generations. It can also be a quilt that tells the family history stitching together bits of fabrics from wedding dresses, baptismal gowns or prom dresses or Dad’s ties into a fabric history book.  Either evokes a feeling of family history or heritage to be preserved through the generations.

The Pry Family Quilt named “Remembering Home” won a special ribbon for embellishment at the National Quilters Association Convention in Columbus, Ohio.  It represents nine years of work compiling bits and pieces of family history extending back to the 1800’s, including portraits, pieces of clothing, family heirlooms, signatures and a written compilation of what each item represents on the quilt as it meanders through historical American small town life. It will allow future generations of my family to physically touch the lives of past generations.  Technique:  Intricate use of embroidery thread and hundreds of stitches.
